A Traveller In Southern Italy, H. V Morton, 1969 (Morton was a journalist in England, who wrote several books on travel.  According to a biography he didn’t speak Italian, although from his writing one would believe that he did, also some of his interesting chance-meetings with people were fabricated.  Morton mentions Norman Douglas, author of “Old Calabria” several times.
