Tours of Roma

Below is information about available tours in Roma from Rome Cabs/Stefano Rome Tours and other assorted ramblings about tours.  Rome Cabs is the transport company we used in 2008 to pick us up at the airport and transport us to the convent.  They did a good job and have a good rating by tripadvisor at http://www.tripadvisor.in/ .  We will use them again this year for the group arriving the morning of May 15 and others may want to use Rome Cabs as well – more on that in a later email.  I have not used his tour service and I present this only for those who are interested in guided tours as one of many possible choices in Roma.  For those interested in tours contact the tour operator directly.  Tours of Roma are not included in this exchange and are at your discretion and arrangement.  To contact others that may be interested in a tour while in Roma click here .

I have listed a few other tours at http://www.datapdq.com/links.htm .  Also if you are interested in a guided tour while in Roma you might also consult standard guidebooks.

A reasonably priced tour, which covers some of the basic sites in Roma, is the walking tour at Stefano Rome Tours web site.  Here is a link to that tour on Stefano Rome Tours web site. http://www.stefanorometours.com/tours/walkingdailytourrome/

If in the past you have visited the central historic places in Roma, two other Stefano Rome Tours you might want to consider are the tour of Tivoli Villas and Ostia Antica & Cerveteri.  For details visit his web site and click the links on the left side.  www.stefanorometours.com  These tours travel outside Roma.

The information below in blue is from emails from Stefano Rome Tours.

Tour of Tivoli Villas
Tour fee: 300 euros (up to 8 people)
Entrance fees (not included):

Hadrian's Villa 6,50 euros pp
Villa d'Este 6,50 euros pp

Price range can go from 15 - 25 euros pp depending on what you order.

Below is an email from Stefano Rome Tours with information about his “Rome in a day” tour:  There are several other tour offerings listed on the web site www.stefanorometours.com

Please have a look at our new website for touring services:

The standard tour I provide in Rome is designed to cover the city

major sites . Additional off the beaten path tours can be

arranged upon request of the client.

The tour begins once I pick you up at your hotel, usually 9AM and ends around 4:30PM

The drive will continue along Ostiense Road and arrive at the

Pyramid built for Caius Cestio .At this

stage of the tour we will be inside the ancient Roman Wall built by

Emperor Aureliano.

We will then arrive at the Circus Maximus, the large ancient stadium for

chariot races. Behind the stadium you

will see the Palatine Hill where the villas and the domus of the

emperors were built. At this point you will

be able to see the Arch of Constantine and the Coloseum. We will stop

here, and you will be able to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum on

your own if you wish. In order to avoid lengthy, and time consuming

queues, I will obtain the entry tickets in advance as a complimentary

service for my clients. The fees for the entry tickets will be added to

the final bill (the Colosseum charges 12 Euros per ticket).

Following the Colosseum, we will stop at the Piazza Venezia where you

will see the Vittorio Emanuele Monument, dedicated to the first king of

Italy.

After the Colosseum there will be a stop for lunch (45 minutes).

We can recommend a quick café (10 Euros pp) or a traditional Italian restaurant (15/20 Euros pp)

Now will be the time to visit the Vatican Museum.

Entrance fee is 14 Euros per person.

Please note that the Vatican Does not pre-sell tickets.

Priority entrance tickets can be booked through the Vatican Museums at 18 Euros per person and they will be picked up at the moment of the tour.

Please note that to be sure to avoid the long lines the only way is to book and pre-pay advanced tikcets through the Vatican Museums at their website http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/tickets/do?weblang=en&do

by clicking on ADMISSION TICKETS. Timeslot 1PM

If you wish to have a tour guide in the
Vatican Museum I can book one at a price of 60 Euros per hour for up to 6 people (75 Euros for up to 8 people).
It will take at least two hours to visit the Museum, The Sistine Chapel and S.Peter's Basilica.

When booking please confirm if you would like to book a private guide.

Please note that the Vatican Museums:

Is closed on Sundays.

Our next destination will be the Pantheon, once the temple of all Roman

gods, then a church and burial place for kings and artists (Raphael).

Near by are the piazzas and fountains that are famous in Rome.

Trevi fountain will follow. Here you can toss a coin in the fountain to

ensure a return visit to Italy.

Finally, you can rest and have a seat on the Spanish Steps.

Please note that the order in which we will visit the sites may vary

pending traffic conditions or other third party act. The tour can be

altered to personalize your desires. Additional costs for entry tickets

are not included in the tour fee, and the costs for entry tickets

purchased in advance will be added to the final bill. The fees for the tours

include tolls and parking, and are required in Euro funds.

Kindly dress appropriately in order to be able to enter a church (knees and shoulders covered).

Tour fee:
for up to two people will be 370 euros
for up to three people will be 380 Euros
for up to four/six people will be 400 Euros

for up to eight people will be 450 euros

(does not include entrance fees to Colosseum and Vatican Museum and lunch)

Booking is simple, I just need your confirmation via E-Mail.

Payment is Euro Cash at the end of the journey.

Vatican Museums

Follow the link below to purchase tickets to the Vatican Museums.  If you read the reviews in guidebooks they say that you should purchase tickets on line in advance.  There can be long lines and long waits to enter if you do not have an advance purchased ticket.  People entering the Vatican Museums in 2008 without advance tickets did wait in line, but generally less than an hour.  Also the Vatican Museums are closed on Sunday, except the last Sunday of the month when it is open free to the public.  Some of us will still be in Roma May 30 – the last Sunday of the month.  Read the free-Sunday policy and check out “Helpful Hints” at the following link or purchase tickets.

Map of some of the major historic sites in Roma

Here is a map I created a 2007 for a nephew that was visiting Roma.  It highlights many of the must-see places.  I have seen other web site maps and guide book maps that have similar maps.  If you like finding your own way around a “Streetwise Rome” map is useful.
